Pumps

Michell Bearings is a trusted manufacturer of hydrodynamic bearings for horizontal and vertical shaft pump applications.

We have a range of thrust bearings, plain journal bearings and tilting pad journal bearings to support bearing loads for horizontal pumps.

We supply bearings for horizonal pumps in which the thrust and radial bearing components are integral with the pump assembly.

Our thrust bearings can be designed with or without load equalisation levers behind the thrust pads. Our Self Equalised (SE) and Equalised Omega (OE) thrust bearings both incorporate equalisation levers, whereas the Omega (OT) range does not require this if used.

Our standard journal bearings range in shaft diameters from 40mm to 300mm and are manufactured with a steel housing and five centre-pivoted journal pads. The journal pads are designed to give a preloaded profile which ensures that a pressure generating, hydrodynamic oil wedge is formed between the journal pads and shaft journal, even under the lightest of loads.

Michell Bearings can also provide solutions for free standing pump bearings or bearings which are flange mounted to the pump casing at each end of the machine.

We have two bearing product ranges for vertical shaft pumps depending on the shaft diameter and magnitude of the thrust loads involved, Advanced Vertical (AV) and Large Vertical (LV). The Vertical Series (V) is associated with journal only bearing solutions for vertical shaft applications.

Our vertical bearing designs are renowned for being compact and self-contained with no reliance on external oil systems. Oil cooling is achieved using water cooling via a heat exchanger mounted in the bearing oil sump. Air and fan cooling can also be provided for some applications depending on the operating specification.

For both horizontal and vertical shaft pump applications, we have access to various bearing linings for thrust and radial bearing elements ranging from white metal (or babbitt) to PTFE and PEEK depending on the requirements of the project.

Our global network and 24 hour manufacturing capability ensures we can react quickly and efficiently to customer requirements.

Select Bearings

PEEK Bearings

PEEK bearings offer high strength and higher temperature resistant advantages, suited to high speed and/or high load applications.

PEEK thrust pads can be fitted into all of Michell Bearings’ standard product range to improve bearing performance on a application.

PTFE Bearings

The ability of the PTFE material to operate safely at minimal oil film thicknesses, allows approximately twice the specific load capacity normally associated with white metal.

PTFE is often specified as first choice for hydro-applications and has been shown to have clear advantages for small pad applications in more standardised reversing pump applications.

SE Series

The Self Equalised (SE) Series is a range of equalised thrust bearing internals. The provision of interacting equalising levers behind the thrust pads allows thrust loads to be mechanically equalised across the complete thrust face.

Journal Pad Units

The range of Journal Pad Units (JPU) covers a shaft diameter range from 40-300mm.

Omega Equalised

The Omega Equalised Series is a range of equalised thrust bearing internals.

Omega

The philosophy of the Omega series involves offering various thrust pad sizes in different combinations to allow the most appropriate thrust bearing to be selected for the application.

LV Series

The Large Vertical (LV) Series is a modular range of high capacity vertical shaft thrust and guide bearings covering a shaft diameter range of 300-600mm across 4 frame sizes.

AV Series

The Advanced Vertical (AV) Series is a modular range of vertical thrust and guide bearings covering a shaft range of 68-411mm across 9 frame sizes.

V Series

Thrust and guide bearings for shaft diameters up to 411mm and axial load capacity up to 738Kn.

MV Series

For vertical shaft machine applications that cannot be satisfied using the Michell AV, LV or V product ranges.
